For those who don’t know what eczema is, it’s a condition where some parts of the skin become itchy, inflamed, and may develop into a rash. Some bumps or tiny fluid-filled blisters that ooze can form on the infected area as well. It mostly occurs in adults, but can also develop in babies. This usually happens to infants whose family has had a history of the disease.

The areas of infection usually include the hands (in adults), and in bending areas like the insides of the elbows, backs of the knees. In very young children it’s typically worst on the facial and head/neck area.

Eczema can be aggravated or caused by eating certain foods. These foods usually result in a flare-up of eczema, which is characterized by a spreading rash, flakiness, bumps, fissures, and peeling of skin.

The degree of the flare-up, though, depends on one’s allergic reaction or tolerance to the food. People who are allergic or intolerant to a particular food will easily get flare-ups from that food compared to someone who is neither allergic nor intolerant.

Foods that can make Eczema worse:

1) Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons are known for worsening the symptoms of eczema. About 36% of eczema patients have experienced flare-ups of eczema about 6-24 hours after eating a citrus fruit. Citrus fruits have a high acid content. These acids found in the fruits result in increased inflammation. Citrus fruits also have chemicals which easily cause irritation to the bodies tissue. These include; Salycilates and amines.

2) Dairy Products

Dairy products, such as ice cream and cheese, cause flare-ups in people who are allergic to them. The allergic reactions are cause tiny wounds in the linings of the intestines. It is the irritation of these wounds that stimulates the flare-ups.

3) Eggs

Eggs have aggravated eczema in more than 70% of the cases studied. This makes eggs the most known foods that make eczema worse. Eggs if eating a lot raw have been proven not only to worsen eczema but also to cause the condition.

4) Wheat

A protein found in wheat called gluten increases the risk of getting eczema. Especially for those who are allergic or intolerant to wheat.

5) Soy

Soy is a rather common food allergy, especially in infants and children. This intolerance makes children with eczema who eat soy develop flare-ups. Around 4% of children are allergic to soy, and by the age of 10 most children will outgrow their soy allergy.

6) Tomatoes

A tomato is one of the foods that make eczema worse. In fact of the listed, it is the only one that has a possibility to worsen eczema even for those who are not allergic to it. So try your best to stay away from tomatoes if you have eczema, whether your allergic/intolerant or not.

7) Chocolate

Chocolates trigger histamine responses in some people. Due to their high content of sugar, dairy, and amines. What’s more, chocolate is rich in caffeine. Caffeine-rich food has been proven to cause of irritation in eczema. When eczema is irritated it displays more symptoms.

8) Processed Food with High Sugar / Trans Fat

Stay away from foods that are high in sugar and trans fat like fast food, burgers, French fries, cakes, soda pop, etc. especially when they’re processed because they can contain added preservatives and artificial ingredients. Too much sugar in high doses can cause eczema to flare up and make your skin worse overall. It also raises insulin levels and causes further bodily inflammation.

Do your best to reduce these foods down to minimum quantity intakes and you should start to see your eczema get better, however if you’re having more problems solving this issue then please check out our video “8 ESSENTIAL Foods / Things to Avoid With Eczema to Reduce Flare-Ups” which is available in the description, or you can purchase an eczema cream that’s also available in the description.
